What Oil Should Be Used In An Air Compressor?

What Oil Should Be Used In An Air Compressor
Using the right air compressor oil for your compressor is very important. This is true for both rotary screw compressors and reciprocating piston compressors. You cant just use your cars oil or hydraulic oil. Compressor oil isnt there just for lubrication, it has a few important functions:
It removes heat from the compression (number 1 function).
It works as a sealing to prevent air leakage (which would lower the efficiency of the compressor).
It lubricates all moving parts.
Its used to cool important parts of the compressor element.
Air compressor oil is specifically designed to do the above jobs well. If you would use oil from your car or hydraulic oil, the compressor will definitely die a slow (or quick) death. Compressors (and the oil) can get very hot. Normal maximum outlet temperature of a rotary screw compressor element is set at 120 degrees Celsius (when it gets hotter, the compressor will shut down). The oil should be able to survive these kinds of temperatures.
Different types of air compressors have different working parts, and may require one or more types of oil. Compressor oil is also used in the pressurized spaces within the compressor. Reciprocating compressors require lubrication for the bearings, pistons, rings, cylinders and valves. The type of oil used must not be carbon-forming and should contain anti-wear additives. Screw compressors can be geared or non-geared. With geared models, lubrication is needed for bearings and gears and to act a sealant between rotors. This type of air compressor requires low-foaming oil with a high resistance to oxidation. Rotary vane compressors are either water-cooled or oil-cooled. In water-cooled systems, oil is fed mechanically to the rotor and bearings in metered quantities. Both systems require oil that is able to withstand severe oxidizing and contains good demulsibility. A low-volatile oil is recommended for use in oil-cooled systems.
